Thank you to Steve Trudell, who attended the 1987 NMMS Foray and provided the information for this page. The following text reflects Steve's recollections of the event and of NMMS' earliest history.

"Eagle Nest 1987 was the first foray in the sense of the typical weekend event with mycologists &c, as far as I know. It was called the Barrowsii Foray. Orson and Hope Miller, David Arora, Linnea Gilman were there - maybe Cathy Cripps too. Tiff and Carlene Skeffington, and Ursula and Herb Pohl were there also. (We all stayed at Pat Brannen's the night before going to Eagle Nest). There are photos of Chuck and Arora together. That was the only time I met Chuck -- I rode with Pat and she took him home afterwards -- first time I saw the deluxe edition of Mushrooms in their Natural Habitat with the View Master reels.1  Not sure who wound up with it when he passed."

1985 & 1986 forays ~
Steve Trudell states that he did not attend the club's Forays for 1985 & 1986, which were both in Red River. He suspects those events were "more informal things." Other that the location and years, we have little information about these first two forays.

In response to a question I (dmw) asked abourt the beginnings of NMMS, Steve responded, "1984 makes sense for founding. As far as I know, the impetus came from Pat Brannen -- she talked a lot about doing it during the NAMA trip to Czechoslovakia in 1983." 2
"I was always under the impression that Pat Brannen was the main motivator. Peg Hooten was an important contributor (for one thing, it was Peg she who designed the NMMS logo), along with Ellen Reed (hence the rationale for the Sipapu "Three Graces" Foray). I had heard Rich Therrien's name but I'm not sure I ever met him.

Notes:
1. Mushrooms in their Natural Habitat was a 2-volume work by Alexander H Smith. The deluxe edition included a View Master with associated color picture reels.

2. Orson Miller "led successful NAMA international forays to Scandinavia (1978), Austria-Yugoslavia (1980), and Czechoslovakia (1983), arranging for interactions with many prominent European mycologists in the people-to-people spirit that was at the heart of NAMA’s origins." (To learn a bit more about Orson, visit this book review by Steve Trudell on the NAMA website.)
