May Meeting - Meet in the "Traveling Exhibit Hall" at the NH Museum
Our next meeting will be on May 4th, 7:30pm, at the Natural History Museum. Contrary to the information I provided last month, we will meet in the Travelling Exhibit Hall, which is where we had been meeting prior to last month. The word from the Museum folks is that at this point, we will plan on holding our June meeting in the Exhibit Hall as well.
For our program this month I have decided to show another taped lecture from the NAMA Conference at Asilomar: a Culinary Demonstration With Jozseph Schultz. I hope this video will appeal to the passion for mycophagy which most NMMS members share.
Last Month's Meeting
We were fortunate last month to welcome a guest to our meeting, which brought the number of attendees to an even dozen. In spite of the noticeably low attendance, we had an enjoyable and productive meeting -- not so enjoyable and productive, however, that I feel like elaborating on just how enjoyable and productive it was. I will say that Mark Kalin brought in some nice Agaricus specimens and that Pat Brannen left the meeting in a good mood. I should further add that these two facts are entirely unrelated.

Recipe - Submitted by Bruce Trigg
Polish Barley Soup
  • ¾ cup pearl barley
  • 4 tsp. sour cream
  • 1½ large onions, chopped
  • 8 cups soup stock
  • ½ cup butter or other fat
  • 2 carrots, diced
  • 1 turnip, diced
  • 1 leek, chopped
  • ½ cup chopped celery
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • ¼ tsp. pepper
  • 1 ounce dried Boletus edulis (use ½ pound of fresh white store mushrooms as alternative or in addition to the dried mushrooms)
  • Reconstitute dried mushrooms in 2 cups of hot water for 20 minutes. Strain and use soaking water as stock. Rinse reconstituted mushrooms in running water to remove any sand. Add beef bullion or vegetable cubes to stock. Simmer barley in 1½ cups of stock until tender, add butter gradually. Boil chopped vegetables until tender in the remainder of the stock, then add the cooked barley and seasoning. Add sour cream when ready to serve. Makes 6 servings.

    Slides Needed
Ted Stampfer stated that he and Bob Chapman have assembled a good number of slides for the "Common Mushrooms" project. However, they still lack some. Ted suggests that this "should give all our budding photographers something to do this summer." Below is the list of species for which we still need photographs.

    Agaricus campestris
    Armillaria
    group
    Clitocybe gibba
    Cortinarius calochrous
    Crepidotus mollis
    Flammulina velutipes
    Lactarius deliciosus
    Pholiota squarrosa
    Pluteus servinus
    Russula
    group
    Albatrellus ovinus
    Auricularia auricula
    Calvatia booniana
    Chlorociboria aeruginascens
    Clavariadelphus truncatus
    Polyporus auricularis
    Pycnoporellus alboluteus
    We could also use more
    representative pictures
    of the following.

    Fomitopsis pinicola
    Ganoderma applanatum
    Sarcodon imbricatum
    Sparassis crispa
    Trametes versicolor

    Foray
We have set the date for this year's Foray: 19-22 August. Dick Homola will be our guest Mycologist. We're still working on the other details.

    Preserving Mushrooms by John Rahart
John Rahart's guide to preserving mushrooms is now complete and available on the the Website.
NAMA Annual Foray - an inquiry from David Wallis
Most folks are aware by now that this year's NAMA conference will be in Missouri on August 12th-15th. I would like to know if any of our members plan to attend. Please contact me if you're going -- or even if you're considering it.
    Taylor Lockwood
Photographer Taylor Lockwood will present his Treasures from the Kingdom of Fungi on the evening of Thursday, 26 August, 1999. Lockwood creates a skillful choreography of phenomenal photos set to beautiful music. This is no ordinary slide show. We will provide further details as we get closer to showtime.
