NMMS June Meeting
Tues, June 5th, 7:30pm
NM Museum of Natural History Multi-Purpose Room.
Program: Dr. Walt Sundberg relates "Lessons from the Chiricahuas"
Our guest speaker for the June 5th meeting is Walt Sundberg, professor of mycology at
Southern Illinois University. Dr. Sundberg has been a welcome guest at numerous local and NAMA Forays.
Those wishing to learn more about the Chiricahua Mountains--as well as those who just enjoy a good
talk--will appreciate hearing Dr. Sundberg relate some of his experiences and knowledge of this unique
area in southeastern Arizona.
Dr. Sundberg accompanied us on Field Trips the weekend of June
2nd & 3rd: Saturday to the Los Alamos Burn Study area and Sunday to the Sandias. Although both areas were fairly dry, we
did find some interesting fungi and enjoyed the benefit of Dr. Sundberg's tutelage.
Field Trips /
Cerro Grande Post-Burn Survey
Future study visits to Los Alamos will depend on the next rainfall.
Conditions were very dry for our visit on Saturday, June 2nd, and all fruiting
bodies have dried up.
Our visit to the Sandias on Sunday the 3rd produced a few
interesting specimens. Perhaps the most exciting were not a fungus, but small orchids which we found in
some abundance.
Our guest Dr. Walt Sundberg accompanied us on both these excursions, using the
occassions enthusiastically to improve participants' mycological knowledge.

lodging will be at El Mesón. Dr. Jack States will return as

NMMS July Meeting in Santa Fe?
I have received two suggestion in response to my idea of holding the July
Meeting in or near Santa Fe.
Marjorie Lutz, who lives on the south side of Santa Fe, has
offered to host a meeting at her house on the evening of Tuesday, July 10. Before I take Marjorie up on
her offer, I would like to hear from members who would plan to attend.
Linda Moscarella, who lives in the Taos area,
suggested
a "foray meeting" near Hopewell Lake. Although this is not quite what I had in mind for the meeting, I
would say that it is also worth consideration.
Sandia Mountain Hiking Guide
A fellow member of the New Mexico Mountain Club
informed me of this excellent resource.
Albuquerque hiker Mike Coltrin has a Website on which he provides "trail descriptions and advice on over
35 separate day hikes in the Sandias, covering more than 50 separate trails, and 200 miles."
