Field Trip Report
East side of Sandias near Doc Long's
Saturday,
23 April 2005
- We set out from the
Cienega Spring trailhead at 08:00, walked along
Faulty Trail
to Cole Spring, and returned along roughly the same route, visiting
portions of Cañoncito and Armijo Canyons on the way back.
- Length and duration of the trip was 10 miles in 10 hours.
- Streams were flowing vigorously in Cienega & Armijo Canyons. Between
Cañoncito and Cole Springs is a small canyon which is un-named on
maps and usually dry, but had a surprising amount of water flowing in it as
well.
- The streams below Cañoncito and Cole Springs seemed to have no more
water that usual.
- There were some concentrations of ascomycetes, but generally they were
spread out along a good portion of our route.
- Stream beds were not significantly more productive than other areas.
- Moist, partially-shaded, north-facing hillsides seemed to be the best
places to look.
- One surprise was that we encountered numerous specimens along many
stretches of the Faulty Trail.
