Mycological Field Trip
East side of Sandias
Monday, 14 May 2o12
Trip Report
Details:
Areas to be visited are in the Elevation range of 2250-2650 m
(7400-8700 ft). We will meet at Doc Long's at
o9:oo. We may
visit that area, and/or we may drive further up the Crest Road.
There is a $3 fee to park at most areas in the Sandias.
Those who don't want to pay the 3 bucks and don't have a permit can carpool
from my house. We will depart from there at o8:15. Please let me know if
you
want a ride. (David Wallis)
Participants should be prepared to walk 3 to 5 miles. There won't be
any snow left, but there may be some mud left from the recent rain.
Directions:
From the intersection of NM Hwys 14 & 536 at San Antonito,
head west on the Sandia Crest Rd (536). The Doc Long parking lot is
approximately 2 miles from the intersection.
During this time in past years, we have encountered some Peziza, and
occasionally find snowbank fungi such as Discina and Caloscypha. We may also
encounter fresh fruitings of
Auricularia (wood ears).
Reasonably well-behaved dogs are welcome. I'll have one or both of my
dogs along. While in the National Forest, dogs must remain on a leash.
Equipment:
Sturdy waterproof footwear and plenty of drinking water.
Current weather conditions suggest that packing some raingear would be
a good idea as well.
This Outing is limited to members of NMMS, NAMA, &
4cmc (and their dogs).
